While Keeping Your Looks Instagram-Worthy

You’d think that as a stylist, I’d show up to a 7-day resort vacation with a massive suitcase, a carry-on, and a dozen pairs of shoes. Well, not exactly. I managed to pack for my week-long resort trip with just a carry-on—and yes, I fit in 5 pairs of shoes (including a pair of summer heels). And no, I didn’t exceed my luggage weight limit either. So, how did I pull it off?

Keep reading for the simplest hacks to keep your trip both fashionable and comfortable.

Style Hack 1: Create a Color Palette!

Before my trip to Cabo, I stayed at the beautiful Hard Rock Hotel (I was juggling back-to-back projects, so my packing happened in 2-3 days or during free pockets of time—I was even working the night before my flight!), I made sure to establish a color palette. It was warm with a pop of trendy colors.

I opted for a slightly autumn-inspired palette to incorporate the leopard print trend while keeping it neutral. To add some flair, I threw in red and burgundy wine accents, which I used through accessories (more on that soon). Black and cream (not white, for photos) are always essential for any palette you create.

Style Hack 2: Pack Versatile Pieces That Work for Both the Beach and a Night Out!

Let’s be real: we don’t always wear everything we pack, but sometimes you get to your destination and think, "I wish I’d packed that!" A black dress is a must—choose a fabric that suits your destination. For example, I dressed mine up with leopard flats, and if we decided to step outside the resort to explore the nightlife, it worked perfectly. I also recommend a couple of maxi dresses and versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched with swimsuits or be part of your travel outfit.

Don't forget to pack swimwear and cover-ups that can double as dresses. I stuck to my color palette, which not only kept me on trend but also made sure I didn’t clash with my background if I wanted photos.

Style Hack 3: Opt for Breathable Fabrics

For this trip, I packed dresses in cotton, jersey, and blends, but linen is another great option. These fabrics allowed me to roll them up and fit everything into my carry-on, leaving more space for accessories.

Style Hack 4: Less Prints, More Solids

I tend to pack mostly solid colors when I travel. If I do include prints, I make sure they’re dominant, like the leopard print I wore. This approach helps me keep accessories to a minimum while allowing for easy mixing and matching without worrying about clashing prints or feeling like I wore the same thing the night before.

Style Hack 5: Accessorize Smartly!

You don’t need three beach bags—trust me, one will do. If you’ve already incorporated a trend into your palette (I went with burgundy red and leopard), let your accessories highlight that. I opted for wine red nails and carried a single burgundy night purse that went with everything I packed—again, the beauty of a color palette. Keep your makeup bag light and minimal.

For jewelry, I recommend one pair of hoops, a set of studs, a bracelet or cuff, and a few favorite chains. You won’t need anything heavy for a resort vacation, and don’t bring your most expensive pieces. Choose pieces you’d be okay with losing. As for shoes, keep it simple: one pair of wedges, two pairs of pool slides (or flip-flops), one cute flat (mine were leopard print), and sneakers for travel. Yes, all of that fit into my carry-on!

I hope this was helpful and do let us know if these tips helped you for your next trip!
