Traveling is supposed to be fun ― it’s an opportunity to explore new places, enjoy new experiences, and create lasting memories. You might be setting out on a solo-adventure, traveling with family and friends, or going on a business trip. Whatever the case may be, it’s one thing’s for sure: it’s an exciting time! Before you head off to your destination, make sure you plan and pack smartly.

Check out our checklist for the savvy traveler to help make the most out of your journey while minimizing any potential travel issues. Fasten your seatbelts, prepare your suitcases, and get ready to embark on a journey toward stress-free, smart traveling.

Choose Appropriate Luggage Bags

Choosing the right luggage bags is an important first step in preparing for your trip. A few factors to consider when choosing your bag is trip duration, international travel, budget airlines, and planned activities. Opt for a versatile, lightweight bag that accommodates all your essentials and has room to bring home souvenirs. If you’re buying a new bag, think about buying one with a strong warranty in case your bag suffers from broken wheels, handles, or zippers. For heavier duty trips, consider a tough and durable rucksack for all your outdoor adventures.

Depending on your needs, you can choose from rolling luggage, 4-wheels, duffel bags, wheeled backpacks, travel backpacks, and carry-ons. Just remember to choose one that aligns with your travel plans. For example, if you plan on spending a majority of time navigating busy airports and urban streets, a wheeled backpack will provide the best mobility.

What to Pack for Your Travels

What you pack for your trip will depend on the type of trip you’re going on and where you’re going, but there are some essentials that are universal.

Clothing Essentials

Where you’re traveling to and what kind of trip you’re going on will impact the type of clothing you’ll want to bring on your trip. You’ll definitely want to pack the essentials ― underwear, socks, and sleepwear. Depending on how long you’ll be gone, you’ll want to bring plenty.

If you’re traveling for business, bring along some dress shirts, pants, and shoes. If you’re traveling for fun, pack casual clothing. If you plan on swimming or going hiking, then you’ll want to include swimsuits, cover-ups, hats, umbrellas, and hiking boots.

Don’t forget to include any extras, like gloves, scarves, belts, ties, and jewelry. Plus, pack extra shoes ― a casual pair for when you plan on spending hours on your feet and a dressier pair for when you find yourself in more intimate settings.

Surprising a loved one with a proposal? Don’t forget the most important item of them all: a ring.

Toiletry Essentials

Toiletries ― though you may find some in the hotels where you stay, it’s important to also bring some of your own. Make sure to have a well-organized toiletry bag that ensures you can find what you need when you need it. Your personal toiletry kit should include travel-sized shampoo, conditioner, body wash, a toothbrush with toothpaste, shaving razor, and a hairbrush or comb.

Don’t forget to pack your preferred skincare products, such as moisturizer and sunscreen, as well as any prescription medications you may need and a compact first-aid kit with things like adhesive bandages and antiseptic wipes just in case.

Technology Essentials

Even if you don’t want to admit it, technology is an important part of daily living now. Sure, traveling may be your way to disconnect from the internet for a little bit, but that doesn’t mean you should leave all your tech at home.

Make sure to have your smartphone and a charger on hand. Power banks are also great for long journeys or unexpected delays. Consider packing noise-canceling headphones for a more peaceful travel experience, and don’t forget any necessary adapters for international destinations, as well as locks and mounts that make sure your technology stays safe.

If you’re on a business trip or planning to do any type of work while away from home, then bring along your laptop or tablet and their respective chargers, too. Lastly, you may want to bring a good quality camera to capture memorable moments. Of course, if your smartphone has a good camera, then you’ll be all set.

Other Essentials

Beyond clothing and toiletries, there are several miscellaneous items that can better your travel experience. Start with a well-organized travel wallet or pouch to keep important documents like your passport, tickets, and travel insurance in one, easy-to-access place. Pack a travel towel, reusable water bottle, and entertainment in the form of a book or an e-reader.

If you really want to take your travels to the next level, pack portable barware and dried fruits. With the essentials, and a couple of fun, miscellaneous items, you’ll create a truly memorable travel experience.
