The idea of travelling can be exciting, but that being said, you do need to make sure that you are adequately prepared for the road ahead.

Start Somewhere Easy

If this is your first time out of the country, then it could be worth choosing an easy destination. Choose somewhere with a short flight time, and also make sure that the culture isn’t too different from the country you’re living in right now. If you live in the US, going to a different state could be a good option, but going from the US to Japan however would mean that you are exposed to a lot of cultural differences, which can make things difficult as a first-time traveller.

Take the Right Luggage

It’s a good idea for you to buy a smaller bag than what you think you need. You can never really go wrong with a travel backpack. Some people like bags that come with wheels but in ways, they can be cumbersome. Big suitcases should also be avoided at all costs because they are difficult to transport, and they take up a ton of room. Packing light is key because it means you won’t have to worry about paying extra at the airport for baggage fees. Aim for 30 lbs max, and don’t take a lot of clothes with you either. If you are staying in a hotel, you will usually be able to take advantage of laundry services anyway. Staying in London? A hotel near Shepherds Bush tube would be a great idea.

Utilise the Cloud

The last thing you want is to drop or lose your phone. This is especially the case if you have been taking a lot of photos throughout your journey. The great thing about cloud backups is that they are very easy to use, and most of the time you can upload photos without having to pay any kind of subscription fee. Just make sure that you are able to access the cloud from any device, so you’re covered if something happens.

Apps for the Whole Family

One of the best apps you could ever hope to have when travelling, is Google Translate. If you download this, then you can translate anything you need, on the go. It may be that you need to translate a menu, or that you need help when deciphering what train stop you need to be getting off at. Either way, apps are a great way to overcome some of the more difficult aspects of travel. Hooking your family up with Skype or even WhatsApp will also help quite a lot, as it means you can connect with them regardless of where in the world you are. You also don’t have to worry about steep charges from your phone company because everything is internet-based.

Lock your Phone

How many banking apps or websites do you have logged in automatically? Lock your phone and enable facial ID, so even if you do drop or lose your device, you can make sure that all of your data and info is kept safe.
