We are all aware that in March of 2020 when the pandemic hit, the economy took a hit. The makeup and beauty industry were no exception. Makeup sales dropped by more than twenty percent and global revenue fell by more than 30 percent. Other areas of the beauty industry, however, saw a rapid increase in sales including health & wellness and skincare products. Not to mention, the rippling boom of the medical aesthetics industry. Cue zoom meetings and the liquid collagen trend.
While some areas of the beauty industry drowned, others thrived. Thanks to several months of wearing masks, showing off our eyes became the unanticipated trend. Mascara, eyebrow art, and false eyelashes were now the forefront of the makeup industry. As the pandemic once again shifts, the world is looking forward to what the beauty industry might look like moving forward.
We surveyed several people from different demographics to help us shed light on what they hope to see when it comes to makeup, skin care, and other beauty trends post-pandemic. The one common theme that each response presented, was that we, hope the beauty industry helps to bring colour and happiness back into our lives. We all deserve it. Here are some of the trends foreshadowed by industry professionals, and some of your responses to what we collectively think the beauty industry has in store for us post-pandemic.

Skin Products That Reduce Signs of Stress
Are you noticing more fine lines, wrinkles, dark circles, or even breakouts as the pandemic has dragged on? I think most of us would raise a glass to that question. Therefore, it is no surprise that the #1 answer to our question “What beauty trend would you like to see more of post-pandemic?” was related to helping reduce stress. It has been proven that chronic stress due to elevated cortisol levels (our stress response hormone), can lead to premature skin aging, dryness and weathering. There have always been products out there that are aimed at tackling stress, but don’t be surprised to see a lot more of them in the coming months.
Having a regular skincare routine is one of the best ways to reduce stress, especially before bed. Some of the new and innovative products created by scientists include The Dennis Gross Stress Rescue Super Serum, and the Olehenrikson C-Rush brightening cream.
The rise in collagen peptide use, whether in capsule, liquid, or power form has also made a dramatic appearance as of late in the beauty industry, claiming to show results in as little as 8 weeks to our skin’s appearance. One of my own favorite stress-reducing products are the Dr. Jaart hydrating face masks that come in sheet form. I find them cooling, comforting, and they have brought a little hygge into my life over the last 2 years. Plus, they leave my skin hydrated and feeling radiant.

High Coverage Foundations and Concealers
Since we are now noticing our new unwanted little friends at the corners of our eyes and mouth i.e. lines/wrinkles, we are searching for more ways to hide them. A quick fix without having to wait too long for results, is to apply full- coverage, yet smooth, colour correcting foundation or concealer. Personally, as a makeup artist and someone with very fair skin and dark circles under my eyes, I swear by the Bye Bye Under Eye full coverage, anti-aging waterproof concealer by It Cosmetics, as well as their colour correcting, full coverage CC cream. And bonus, they both contain SPF 50! It leaves any skin type fully covered, smooth, but also glowing in that desired dewy sort of way. Another great full coverage foundation is the highly popular Estee Lauder Double Wear Stay In Place formula. After having our faces covered up by masks for so long, there’s no better trend to hit the market than new foundation and concealer products to help our skin make a comeback, and look more radiant than ever.
Teeth Whitening
Teeth Whitening is yet another anticipated trend and ripple effect after prolonged mask wearing. Teeth whitening sales have risen over 50 percent in the last couple of months with the anticipation of the endemic. And what a great way to give your face a well-deserved glow up. One of the first things we notice about someone is their smile. And since we will have a whole lot more to smile about moving ahead, it is anticipated that the teeth whitening trend will be one of the top services in the beauty industry for a while. This answer took the #2 spot in our survey as it can be affordable, and it doesn’t require a lot of ongoing maintenance. With this in mind, it is always important to consult your dentist or doctor first! It might be that composite bonding is more suitable for your teeth than teeth whitening. Personally, I look forward to pampering my pearly whites post-pandemic.

Colour Cosmetics – Specifically Lip Colour
Colour cosmetic sales took a dive in 2020 and they are ready to make a fresh comeback. The new mission for many cosmetic companies and brands is to bring back some needed happiness into our lives again. What better way to do this, then to bring back innovative products with bright colours. For obvious reasons, the industry expects lip colour to make a colossal surge in sales post-pandemic, and bright bold colours are one the way to being the number one makeup trend. The collective prediction from industry professionals include the nude eye and bold lip trend making a come-back.
One of the products being manufactured currently is the no-smear, glossy lip stain. So, keep your eyes peeled for that one. Blush and contouring techniques including in the medical aesthetics world, will also be on the rise. Pigmented permanent lip blush is already on the rising in popularity, as is face contouring with injectables.
Travel Size Makeup and Skincare
Is travel at the top of your list for goals post-pandemic? I know it is for me. Naturally, it is no surprise that the industry will be producing and selling more travel size skin care products and cosmetics. Plus, if there is a product that you have always wanted to try but didn’t want to splurge on the full-size bank-account-denter option, now is your chance. It is anticipated with a higher level of travel in the coming years, people will be on the lookout for more compact makeup and skincare options.
Let’s all be real here. When the pandemic comes to a close, and we are past the emotional side of it all, we are ready to embrace the more joyous side of the beauty industry. And it's waiting for us too……
