March 2019 London programme highlights

In 2019 The Other Art Fair is setting itself the challenge of creating a Greener Future and all twelve of the fair’s global editions this year are to focus on issues of sustainability in a special programme curated by arts broadcaster and Soho House Head of Collections Kate Bryan. Kate has programmed a year-long series of events, initiatives and exhibitions within the fair context to highlight climate change and put forward environmentally friendly art and ideas.

Highlights will include Upcycle, a unique initiative, allowing visitors the chance to have old artworks reworked for a nominal fee. Visitors to the fair are encouraged to bring an unwanted print, an unloved old artwork or a piece resigned to the junk-pile for an established artist to 'upcycle'. The exciting line-up of artists taking part in the daily programme includes Charming Baker.

The fair will have a permanent Feedback Wall which will be designed by a local artist and will allow visitors to leave ideas and suggestions to further the cause. Part of an ongoing effort to create a guilt-free, engaged audience of art lovers who help each other be more eco-aware.

Beccy McCray will present The Full Circle, a playful installation artwork that uses tens of thousands of reclaimed ‘hole-punches’ to simulate snow. This physically immersive work is a reflection on consumption and the vast amount of waste generated over the festive season - and the impact this has on our fragile environment.

Full details of Greener Future will be announced in late February.

Visitors will step into the 16th London edition of the fair through a vibrant entrance installation by Australian born, Bristol based illustrator Anna Higgie in her signature "cut- outs" style, comprising of colourful plants, shapes and creatures. Anna will also be selling prints and illustrations.

Unmissable is a unique exhibition of portraits by emerging and established artists that depict the faces of missing persons to mark the 25th anniversary of the Missing People charity. The exhibition is curated by Ben Moore, whose brother Tom has been missing since 2003. Unveiled for the first time at the fair, the works will also be available to bid on via the Paddle8 auction site, with all proceeds going to Missing People.

The Illustration Corner will see an emerging illustrator host a daily interactive drop-in project which visitors can participate in for free. Participating artists Charlotte Ager, Rachel Hillis, Benjamin Phillips and Erin Aniker.

One of the highlights of The Illustration Corner is a ‘Protest & Power’ poster workshop led by London based illustrator Erin Aniker, who will be encouraging you to create and take home your own feminist poster design. Open to all drawing abilities, Erin will provide a variety of illustrated black and white poster templates of renowned feminist icons to embellish using provided art materials. There will also be blank poster templates for more confident drawers to fill with their illustrations and personal feminist heroes. You can choose to take your poster home with you, gift it to a friend or hang it up as part of a poster wall art installation which will be part of the drop-in workshop at The Other Art Fair.

Rebecca Mason's Neon Health Service (NHS) Department of Light Therapy returns to The Other Art Fair with The Sorry Stall. Offering visitors the chance to apologise for mistakes and regrets - this is the time to recognise that apologising is not a sign of weakness but rather an act of kindness. With 2018 having been a year of big public apologies combined with an increasing insistence on being 'right,' Mason's installation is as powerful and relevant as ever. The artist will take a selection of the apologies and use them on the formal background to an “I am sorry” neon to be released later in 2019.

March’s featured Guest Artist is Los Angeles based Gary Baseman who will present an immersive experience called The Purr Room where Baseman shares the healing power of his pet cat Blackie's purr though a experiential art installation. Blackie is Gary's sage, muse, and guru; a magical, mystical talking cat with a special triple purr that is deep, resonant, and grounding. A response to the chaos and noise of the world and daily news, Baseman will ask attendees to pause and think about who they love unconditionally, what a hug feels like, and to draw a favourite pet. Afterwards a single person or small group enter The Purr Room to listen and feel the "power of purr". Baseman will also offer two limited edition prints for purchase, The Power of Purr and The Sanctum of Purr

In a world where perhaps nothing is how it first seems, Creative Giants will present Analogue / Digital, an immersive installation arena in the fair, showcasing artists at the forefront of the UK’s contemporary art scene, across all media, that comfortably inhabit the analogue-digital space; artists whose work explores, embraces, challenges or radically opposes analogue, digital or a mash-up of the two.

The 140 contemporary artists have been handpicked by a respected selection committee including Chief Curator and VP Art Advisory for Saatchi Art, Rebecca Wilson, Maddox Gallery’s Managing Director James Nicholls, Gallerist and Co-founder of The Line London Megan Piper and Andrew Renton, Professor of Curating at Goldsmiths University.

Alongside a host of interactive performances, the fair offers free kids activities, Saatchi Art guided tours, live music throughout the weekend from Soho Radio, Hand Poke tattoos by Brazilian artist Nara Ishikawa, plus a lively bar and a superb on-site Island Poke restaurant.

Since its launch in 2011, The Other Art Fair has welcomed more than 167,000 visitors from around the world to its fairs, while becoming a mainstay of the London art scene.

With its distinguished committee of experts and guest curators, The Other Art Fair has established itself as the fair of choice for London’s emerging collectors. Over 68% of clients at The Other Art Fair London 2018 edition were first time or occasional buyers, introducing a new generation of art buyers.1 In keeping with its position as both progressive and accessible, The Other Art Fair is affiliated with the Arts Council’s ‘Own Art’ initiative. This initiative allows buyers to spread the cost of a purchase over 10 months with an interest free loan, enabling more art lovers to become collectors.

Founder of The Other Art Fair, Ryan Stanier, comments "2019 is a monumental year for us as we will be hosting a record twelve editions of the fair across the world in London, Brooklyn, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, Sydney and Melbourne. We have some incredible programming this March in London, from the launch of our Greener Future initiative through to our rich and exciting mix of installations, workshops and interactive projects, and the chance for visitors to buy direct from the most exceptional emerging artists."

Jessica Chow, The Other Art Fair’s UK Fair Manager adds, “This fair’s line-up continues to push the boundaries of the traditional art fair, encouraging visitors to get involved, ask questions and discover something new. I can’t wait to present our 140 incredible artists, who continue to raise the standard of the fair year on year. It will be a great start to 2019.”
