While dewy skin and low-maintenance hair were the most prevalent trends at the spring/summer 2017 shows, the most notable beauty trends were the bright and bold looks. From a glitter parade at Fendi, DKNY, and Shiatzy Chen to eighties inspiration at Kenzo, Chanel, and Marc Jacobs, beauty looks this season are unapologetically loud.

From warm eye shadow palettes to subtle contouring, here are the beauty trends to look out for in 2017:

1. Subtle Contouring

Say goodbye to harsh, garish contouring and welcome subtle dimension. The trick is simply using a fluffy brush to sweep bronzer or contour powder over your temples and hairline. You don’t have to be too precise in your application because you are going for a softer, less severe look. So be sure to blend thoroughly!

To take things up a notch, apply some highlighter on your cheekbones, down the bridge of your nose, and on your pair of cupid’s bow for extra definition.

2. Naturally Filled Brows

Things went a little crazy in the eyebrow department last year when overly-defined eyebrows took the beauty scene by storm.

But while that look may have made a dramatic impact in editorials, it just doesn’t really fly IRL. Luckily for us this year, softer, more natural-looking brows give us much to love about this trend.

And an added plus? It takes way less time to achieve this look. Simply fill in your brows with brown brow pencil and comb through with clear brow gel.

3. Eighties Colour Palette

From low-key shades to in-your-face neon hues, runway beauty was all about the eighties this spring/summer 2017. From bright blush at the temples at Kenzo and Chanel to poppy eyelids at Nina Ricci to Marc Jacobs’s entire show (which was inspired by the rave culture of the eighties), retro fever is back. So invest in the brightest pigments you can find and go all out with your makeup this season!

4. Glitter Lips

The spring/summer 2017 runways saw no shortage of shimmer, as designers from Fendi, DKNY, Marc Jacobs, Rodarte, and Giambattista Valli put on a sparkly show with glitter lips, glitter eye shadow, and glitter cuticles.

Not dramatic enough for you? Pair glitter lips with bold eyeliner for a killer combo.

USEFUL TIP

Remember to keep your lips moisturised as even the most creative beauty look won't look good if your skin is dry and dehydrated! Our personal recommendation: Eos Lip Balm.

4. Micro-Plaits

The seventies flower child gets an update as plaits get thinner this season. From the skinny braids sported at Roberto Cavalli to the woven chignon ones worn at Erdem, plaits appeared in various forms on the spring/summer 2017 runways. Romantics will love the fairytale-like braids seen at Valentino, while sporty girls will find that Dior’s plaited buns do the trick just fine. For something a little quirkier, Kenzo’s looped braids will make you the centre of attention. This season, there’s a braid for everyone!

5. Warm Eyeshadow

As the weather heats up towards spring/summer, orange, fuchsia, copper and other warm tones are having their moment. Lucky for us, these colours are universally flattering. Just make one feature your focus and let the hues pop!

Bonus: you can even match your nails with your eye shadow!
