As we spring into the new season, it’s time to stock up on new wardrobe staples and runway pieces. While spring/summer 2016 saw a prevalence of denim, military-inspired styles, and sleek silhouettes on the streets, this year the style crowd are favouring crisp fabrics and cool palettes, bright hues and loud prints.
With the Pantone Colour of the Year fresh as a spring leaf, fashionistas are taking their cue with their OOTDs going lighter, brighter, and just as chic.
Get ready for these major trends for this coming spring/summer:
1. Crisp Neutrals
Neutrals typically never go out of style. What’s different this time is the pairing of crisp cotton and linen separates with neutrals in knits for the perfect outfit for fall/winter transition to spring/summer. Hit the streets in your perennial favourites and give your outfit a quick update with a a breezy cotton shirt or cool white ribbed top.

2. Prints
Nothing makes quite as loud a statement as a major show-stopping print. Whether it’s a sultry motif like Chiara Ferragni’s (below, left) or an unmissable pop art print, va-va-voom prints are a way to turn heads. For advanced level style cats, mix and match your prints with a solid shade (LOVE Chiara’s metallic red!) or a similar print.

3. Bright Clashes
After the long dreary monsoon and fall/winter seasons, where darker palettes ruled the day, it’s time to clear some closet space for brights now! Go bold with neon hues and mix your colours without fear. It’s a much-needed perk-me-up as the days get warmer.

4. Athleisure
Still showing no signs of stopping, this beloved trend is making its rounds in sneakers and track pants. A more laidback version of sports luxe, which was also one of the most popular trends of 2016, athleisure is versatile enough to take you from the office to the streets. So go ahead and pump up your kicks, because sportswear just got legitimised.

5. Maxi Dresses
You might automatically veer towards mini skirts and dresses as the days get hotter, but maxi dresses in lightweight material like tulle and lace are more modest alternatives that make a statement. Pair a simple maxi dress and let the silhouette do the talking. Accessorise sparingly so your dress will be the centre of attention.

6. Metallics
What better way to dazzle onlookers than by reflecting the golden light of the sun? Metallic accents like sequins and gold lamé are a quick way to dial up the daytime glamour. Tone down the bling with neutrals and sneakers for day, if you must. But for evening, it’s your time to shine: add on some sleek accessories and step out in your sexiest strappy stilettos.
