From prep work to laying on colour, the process of getting the perfect pout can seem like entirely too much work. Most women simply apply a quick swipe of lipstick before heading out, and that’s fine if you’re going for an undone, low-maintenance look. But if you’re looking for something more sophisticated or professional, a swipe of lippie isn’t going to cut it. For one thing, it has no staying power. For another, the colour can look uneven.
To get long-lasting lip colour that sits on evenly, there are several crucial basic steps to follow. The good news is, these don’t take long. Here are five quick and easy steps for the perfect pucker:
1. Prep
Particularly if you are wearing matte lipstick, which tends to highlight all potential imperfections of your lips, it is critical to make them soft, smooth and plump before applying lipstick. Don’t skimp on the prep work!
Before doing anything else, exfoliate your lips. This helps to get rid of any flaky, peeling skin and reveal soft lips on which you can apply your lipstick evenly and smoothly.

A DIY lip scrub is easy enough to prepare: just mix some brown sugar with honey and olive oil. Then gently massage it onto your lips for few minutes before rinsing.
An alternative is to gently exfoliate with a toothbrush and some petroleum jelly to remove the layer of dead skin on top.
2. Moisturise
Now that your lips are exfoliated, it’s time to give them some loving. Pamper them by dabbing on some ultra hydrating balm or lip serum to moisturise and plump up your lips.

Leave the balm on while doing the rest of your makeup to give your lips some time to soak in the product. Before applying lip makeup, wipe off the excess lip balm with a damp cloth or wet tissue. Be sure to remove it thoroughly, especially if you’re applying liquid lipstick.
3. Line Your Lips
Applying lip liner helps keep your lip makeup clean and neat by preventing smudging and fading. In other words, it helps your lipstick stay put longer. Look for a lip liner in the same shade as your lipstick. Line your lips, and then fill them in for a richer and more intense colour.

4. Layer Your Lipstick
For even longer lasting lip colour, blot your lips with a dry tissue and and then reapply the lipstick. This will not only add intensity to your lip colour, it also makes it last longer. Plus, blotting your lips with tissue helps you avoid cake-y looking lips.
5. Set With Loose Powder
Lastly, to make sure your lipstick stays in place, set it with some loose powder so that it doesn’t smudge. Hold a thin piece of tissue paper over your lips (preferably one ply), then dust some setting powder on it. The powder will filter through the tissue and coat your lips without looking white or powdery.
