Ladies, using makeup can be daunting. Which trends are in, how much is too much and would it harm the skin? We have got you covered! All your cosmetic woes can finally be answered with some beauty 101 tips from professional makeup artists.

Beno Lim has been in the industry for a long time and shares his tips and opinions on what to look out for.

1. How long have you been a makeup artist and how did you get your start in the industry?

I have been a makeup artist for 25 years. Since my schooling days, I always love reading fashion magazines. I am a visual person so images and colors attract me. One day I came across an article of the late Shu Uemura. I was impressed by this talented man who devoted his life to his craft. I told myself that I want to build my career as a makeup artist not just having an ordinary job.

I answered a newspaper ad, Prescriptives were looking for male Beauty Analysts. I was self-taught in makeup and l managed to impress my then trainer and got the job. I was the first male servicing behind the counter. I remember when I told my mom that I got the job and she replied "good, for the time being, maybe you will find another job after 3 months". Till now I still like to update my mom in what project and shoot that I am involved in. I stayed in Prescriptives for 10 years and moved to MAC for 15 years.

2. Describe a typical day in the life of Beno Lim.

The beauty of my job is that no two days are the same for me. One day I could be out in the hot, humid outdoors shooting fashion spreads. Or doing makeup for Singapore fashion designers Look Book Shoot. (I love to support local fashion designers, I had worked with Amos Ananda, Reckless Ericia, Whole 9 Yards, Sabrina Goh, Max Tan, Peter Kor, Caveman.)

The next day I could be conducting makeup workshops for aspiring makeup artists or for consumers. To me, every day is another new adventure, new opportunities.

3. What is your favourite part of your job?

My favourite part of my job would be inspiring the up coming makeup artists and sharing makeup tips with the consumers. I know that I have done my job well, when makeup artist or consumer came up and told me that they enjoyed the makeup session and they have learnt something new. That is pure job satisfaction.

4. Who is your favourite beauty icon?

My favourite beauty icon have to be Iris Apfel. She is 94 years old but age never stops her from doing what she loves. I love her manner, her great personal style. Love her inpirational quotes:

"When you don't dress like everyone else. You don't have to think like everyone else."

"There's no how-to road map to style. It's about self-expression. And, above all, Attitude."

5. What is your signature look and what do you think sets you apart from other makeup artists?

My signature look has to be super real, beautiful touchable skin. With subtle highlighting and contouring

6. What are some must-haves in your makeup kit?

Some of my must-haves in my makeup kit would be Estée Lauder Micro Essence Aquqceutical Mist, Bobbie Brown Cushion Compact SPF 50, Elizabeth Arden Flawless Start Instant Perfecting Primer, Eight Hour Cream Nourishing Lip Balm SPF 20, Makeup Store Blotting Powder, Makeup Store Premium Tri Brow, Clinique Lip Pop, and Bobbi Brown Pink Sand Lipstick

7. What do you think is the next big beauty trend?

The next big beauty trend would be having makeup products that can multi-task and are packaged in a palette. Women are getting busy, they want products that are user friendly and show results.

8. Which current beauty trends do you think are here to stay?

Being individual, the best version of yourself. Makeup that is super natural and real would definitely be here to stay.

9. What is one beauty trick that most women do not know?

One beauty trick that most women do not know is to add one drop of Elizabeth Arden, Eight Hour Cream All Over Miracle Oil into your liquid foundation. This gives a more sheer and luminous finish for the skin. It is also easier to blend the foundation.

10. What is one beauty staple every woman should own?

Every women should own would be a face mist. I love Estée Lauder, Micro Essence Aquaceutical Mist. We are always experiencing extreme temperatures throughout the day. It's hot outdoors but cold air conditioning indoors, the mist helps to hydrate and relief the skin.

It refreshes the makeup too!

11. What is a common makeup/skincare mistake many women make?

One common makeup mistake many women make is not wearing makeup at all. Natural makeup is not equal to wearing nothing on the face. There is still skincare, primer, light weight foundation and a touch of colors.

Makeup today, has these amazing textures that make you feel weightless. It is a basic courtesy to wear makeup every day. It shows that you put in effort to love yourself and provide positive energy.

12. What is one beauty advice you have for men or women?

My beauty advice for men and women would be "I believe in the power of makeup". It is not complicated, makeup lifts up your spirit and confidence. A better version of yourself!
