6 Fashionable Movies
with the Best Wardrobes

The Devil Wears Prada collection by Hayden Williams: Miranda & Andy

Fashion and film have always been closely tied together. The clothes worn by characters are part of the draw for commercial movies, and a well-curated wardrobe can also add texture to a film. Fashion and film benefit mutually too - there are films that influence runway trends, and those whose appeal comes mostly from the fabulous clothes worn on set.

There's a wealth of stylish movies to choose from. So if you are looking for some cinematic fashion inspiration, here are five movies you have to catch ASAP if you haven't already:

1. Sex and the City (2008)

No list of fashionable films would be complete without SATC, the TV series and then movies that were based on the bestselling novel by Candace Bushnell. With its unabashed indulgence in fashion, the buzz surrounding this film was mostly about the wardrobe. But yes, we were of course happy for Carrie when she got her happy ending with Mr Big.

2. The Devil Wears Prada (2006)

Many huge fashion labels, such as Dolce & Gabbana, Calvin Klein, Prada, Valentino, Versace, Gucci, and Fendi allowed their clothes and accessories to be used in the movie, making it the most expensively costumed film to date.

Aside from the drool-worthy outfits, the movie also presented an insight to the fashion industry. But really, it was the no-nonsense fashion editor Miranda Priestly, played by the brilliant Meryl Streep (her glacial stare can bring on the next Ice Age), that really stole the show. (The character was rumoured to be based on Vogue's editor-in-chief Anna Wintour.)

But while the characters may have been terrible, the clothes most certainly weren't.

3. The Great Gatsby (2013)

The modern adaptation starring Leonardo DiCaprio majorly revived twenties fashion. With drop-waist dresses dripping from Prada paired with Tiffany necklaces for ladies and dapper suits for the gentleman, the wardrobe on set makes this movie one of the most sumptuous period dramas of late. Channel your inner Daisy Buchanan with opulent accessories, dramatic hair and makeup, and of course those shift dresses for a modern twist on flapper style.

4. Breakfast at Tiffany's (1961)

Seeing the legendary Audrey Hepburn in her classic Givenchy dress marked the start of every woman's love affair with the Little Black Dress. Paired with a pearl necklace and over-sized sunglasses, the LBD is arguably the most iconic clothing item in fashion history, in no small part thanks to the unforgettable scene where Holly Golightly hovered outside Tiffany's. An LBD is now a staple in many women's wardrobe thanks to its versatility and timeless appeal.

5. Confessions of a Shopaholic (2009)

"You speak Prada?" That's an actual line from the movie, by the way. With that, you know this movie will speak to your inner, well, shopaholic. With an entire movie devoted to shopping (and, okay, its pitfalls), you know you'd be spending an inordinate amount of time lusting over the outfits. We know this is a cautionary tale about shopping addiction, but we can really, really empathise with Becky Bloomwood.

6. Clueless

The 1995 film starring Alicia Silverstone showcased and popularised the "schoolgirl prep" look that involved knee-high socks, matching plaid jackets and skirts, denim jackets, headbands, over-sized blazers, and other fun things from the nineties that can actually be re-worn. And that scene where Cher was able to computer-generate all her outfits? Don't you wish you could do that too?
