6 Life Hacks
that Save Time in the Morning

In our hectic, hyper-connected world, the pressure is always on to making the most out of every minute in our lives. Everything is about efficiency, how much we can get done in the shortest possible amount of time. And that is no mean feat, particularly in the mornings when you are still groggy with sleep and not yet properly caffeinated.

With all the well-intentioned life hacks shared on the Internet that promise to save you time and effort, how do you know which ones really make your life easier and which ones you can pass? So we put a few of them to the test and found that these are the ones that actually work:

1. Showering the Night Before

Arguably the best time-saving tip, this helps to save an extra 30 minutes in your morning routine, so you can get away with sleeping in a little later!

What doesn't work, though, is setting your outfit for the next day the night before. The stress of picking what you want to wear isn't what you want to deal with before bedtime. Besides, how are you supposed to know what you will be in the mood to wear the next day? Spend that time showering and getting ready for bed, and you will have freed up your morning to pick out the day's outfit.

2. Streamline Your Daily Makeup Routine

For working women, you know how important it is to streamline your morning makeup routine. Keep it simple, with essential steps that will have you looking fresh and cleaned up without requiring too much time. Multitasking products such as tinted moisturisers definitely save you a few steps.

What doesn't work? Doing your makeup on your morning commute. Applying mascara on the train or in your car might seem like it would save time, but really it's just a recipe for disaster. Smudged eyeliner, blotchy, uneven application of foundation, stares from other people - need we say more? So stay safe and do your makeup properly in the comfort of your bathroom!

3. Pack Your Gym Bag the Night Before

To make your mornings as stress-free as humanly possible, pack your gym bag the night before so you can just grab and go the next morning.

Just don't skip the gym entirely. Putting it off or not going at all isn't doing your mind and body any favours. So put in that extra time to hit the gym, pack your bags diligently, and just do it.

4. Dry Shampooing Your Hair

Dry shampoo is heaven sent for busy women. For the girl-on-the-go who needs to squeeze in a quick shower at night (or sometimes doesn't even have time to shower) but who doesn't want greasy hair the next day, dry shampoo is your answer.

5. Going to Bed With Wet Hair in a Bun

If you don't have spare time to style your hair each morning, here's a nifty trick: after showering at night, spray your wet hair with styling spray, briefly run your fingers through it, and then throw it up in a loose but firm bun. When you wake up in the morning, you'll have that coveted sexy bed hair. And the best part is, it didn't even take a minute of your precious morning hours!

6. Staying Focused with Background Noise

Create a morning playlist or podcast to keep your brain focused on getting ready for the day. You might think that might distract you, but really it helps to keep your thoughts from wandering from your morning agenda. A mid- to fast-tempo track can even speed things up.

On the other hand, forbidding yourself from checking your cellphone can be counter-productive in staying focused. Many people are under the impression that if they stayed away from your phone in the mornings, they would save themselves from distractions such as email, Facebook, Instagram, and more. That may be true to some extent, but if someone tells you not to think about coffee, what would you immediately think of? Exactly. So allow yourself a couple minutes to check for updates, perhaps while you're styling your hair or making coffee (you earned those minutes you managed to save!), and you won't obsess over your Inbox or Twitter updates.
