5 Things You Need to Know About Jeremy Scott
If you haven't heard about Jeremy Scott's latest collaboration with Melissa shoes by now, consider this your special memo. The American designer, best known for his idiosyncratic aesthetics, has teamed up with the Brazilian footwear label for a Spring/Summer collection.
Melissa, best known for its comfy jelly shoes and collaborations with major designers like Karl Lagerfeld and Vivienne Westwood, can now add another big name to its list. The Jeremy Scott X Melissa collection is everything you'd expect it to be and more, infused with Scott's quintessential vibrancy and playfulness that calls to mind poolside parties and lazy summer days.

The collection is in stores worldwide, so before you get your hands on a pair or two of Scott's creations for Melissa, here are five things you need to know about him:
1. He paid his dues to get where he is today.
Scott was born in Kansas City and raised on a farm in Missouri. But his passion for fashion and determination to make it as a designer living in Paris drove him to take French lessons when he was 14 years old. He later graduated from the Pratt School of Design in New York after interning at Moschino's PR department in his senior year.
2. He dressed Björk before she shot to fame.
In the late 1990s, his career kicked off when he worked with Björk. He presented his debut collection at Paris Fashion Week for his eponymous label in 1997.
By the time Scott showcased his fourth collection, Björk was rapidly rising to fame and joined by other pop stars like Madonna, Britney, and Kylie Minogue.
3. He's the current Creative Director of Moschino.
Since 2013, with Scott at the creative helm, the Italian fashion house has returned to the spotlight thanks to Scott's distinctive, quirky blend of humour, satire, and pop culture-inspired designs. Dubbed "Barbie Boy" by The New Yorker magazine, Scott is all about youthful exuberance and doesn't shy away from kitschy designs. In fact, he embraces them.
4. He's the go-to designer for pop stars.
Rihanna, Britney, Katy, Nicki, and Björk all turn to him. His designs were featured in Rihanna's "We Found Love" music video, Britney's "Toxic" music video (remember that futuristic air stewardess dress?), and Katy Perry's performance at the Super Bowl (we still see that beach ball-inspired dress among those dancing sharks when we close our eyes).
Scott's close friendship with celebs allowed him to extend his label's reach from Paris to LA, as well as raise the visibility and sales of both Moschino and his own label.

5. He incorporates pop culture into his designs.
Scott is a pop-culture buff, and his designs reflect that fascination with American consumer culture. He goes for icons instead of silhouettes and aesthetics, immortalising the likes of Barbie, Coca Cola, McDonald's, and Loony Tunes in his creations for Moschino the way Andy Warhol did with his iconic Campbell soup pop art painting. Little wonder that his work has amassed a cult following that is only growing bigger by the day.
