WITH TRADITIONAL MEXICAN COSTUME FROM THE TEXTILE MUSEUM OF CANADA
TORONTO - Frida Kahlo: Through the Lens of Nickolas Muray comprises 50 photographic portraits of renowned Mexican artist Frida Kahlo taken by Hungarian-born photographer Nickolas Muray between 1937 and 1946, capturing the exceptional breadth of Kahlo’s persona from the photographer’s unique perspective as her friend and intimate confidant. The exhibition includes pioneering colour images whose lush, saturated colours highlight the elaborate wardrobe that was an intrinsic part of Kahlo’s identity during the 1930s and 40s, when political idealism and national fervor were at their height among her circle of urban intellectuals.
In many of Muray’s photographs, Kahlo poses in traditional Mexican dress – ornate garments that reflect the influence of her personal heritage. Demonstrating the significance of Mexican costume and their histories to Kahlo’s self-identity and self-portraiture, the photographs in this exhibition are complemented by vibrant textiles from the Museum's collection of traditional Mexican dress that correspond to Frida Kahlo’s own collection in both provenance and style.

Today, Frida Kahlo remains one of the most revolutionary and influential women in modern culture. Her penchant for distinctive garments and accessories defined her flamboyant look. The Textile Museum’s collection of Mexican shawls, blouses, bags and skirts accentuates her refined appreciation of regional costume and textiles, as well as her understanding of how personal style can entail profound artistic expression. Like her paintings, her legendary wardrobe was emblematic of her creative imagination. A unique documentary record, the iconic images bridge art and fashion, photography and portraiture, revealing not only Muray’s great artistry but also Kahlo’s extraordinary character.
