TORONTO - A striking voice from behind the stage signaled the crowd that the show was beginning.

In a thigh high black number, Renee Thompson, more popularly known as Runway Renee, strutted down the runway belting out her single Up Against The Wind. Emerging after her was Stephan Caras’ fall winter collection “Rubi”, an edgier and darker follow up to his spring summer.

With floral imagery on red taffeta, snake skin leather pants and leopard print lining on the only dose of oatmeal colour, there were a few contradictions in the collection. But overall, Stephan Caras did Stephan Caras and that is what he successfully does best.

In fire engine red and classic black, there were gothic lace panels and skin bearing cut outs on body conscious gowns with scintillating details flashing from their bodices. Deep necklines and one sleeved dresses exposed the femininity of a woman’s neckline. The chiffon train of a black leather short suit with double thigh zippers flowed down the runway in dramatic fashion, as it did with the final look: a red floral halter top pant suit, worn best by model Dauphine McKee.

The Rubi collection bore a few similarities from last season; the differences being the more daring colour and the overall theme of rock and roll strength. One thing about the show we’re all happy didn’t change was Kyriako Caras carrying his young daughter down the runway to our applause. A cute little baby in a custom dress never gets old.
