BACK TO BASICS

Beautiful and healthy hair is the key to a great look. There are several factors that contribute to the quality of our hair including a well-balanced diet, healthy lifestyle, and the use of suitable hair products.

A well-balanced diet is the best way to keep your hair in top condition. Eat plenty of fruit and green leafy vegetables. The power of dark green veggies comes from being packed with vitamin A, vitamin C, iron and calcium. The vitamins are essential for sebum production, an oily substance secreted by your scalp that acts as a natural hair conditioner. Make sure your diet includes enough healthy omega-3 fats, which are found in salmon, oysters, soybeans, flaxseed oil, and walnuts. Hair is made of keratin, a form of protein, so don't skimp on protein-packed lean meats, fish, eggs, beans, and low-fat dairy products such as milk and fresh yogurt.

Avoid processed and canned foods. If you lead a busy life and don’t have time to cook, supplement your diet with the hair-building vitamins B6, B12, evening primrose oil, folic acid and a good multivitamin. Eliminate smoking, caffeine and fizzy drinks from your life – it will make your hair grow stronger and longer. Nutrition interventions take time; expect to show off new shine in about six months.

Trimming our hair is the best way to rejuvenate its best qualities. This simple little task makes a tremendous difference to the overall health and appearance of your hair. Regular trimmings will stimulate growth, deplete dead-ends and considerably lessen the frizz.

Stress can have extremely adverse long-term effects on both the quality and the colour of your hair. Learn to manage your time well and keep mental pressure at a minimum level. In fact, stress is the number one cause of excessive hair loss. Regular exercise and meditation will help to keep your mind fresh and achieve the right balance. And last but not the least, get adequate amount of peaceful sleep.

Another important factor in keeping your locks beautiful is using the high quality products and  professional treatments that are suitable for your hair type.

Last week, Fashion Studio Magazine had the pleasure to meet Robert Karkinski, experienced Stylist and D2E Hair Boutique Manager. During our short interview, we asked Robert to share some of his top hair tips and reveal some of the trade secrets...

Robert

Occupation: Hair Stylist / D2E Hair Boutique Manager
City: Toronto

FASHION STUDIO: How would you describe the style and atmosphere of D2E Hair Boutique?

ROBERT: We like to take a very down-to-earth approach to life and style. We focus on practical, style specific colouring and cutting, all our services are adjusted to everybody's personal lifestyle.

The atmosphere in the salon is fun, we like to communicate on regular basis and try to engage our clients with one another to create a very comfortable environment.

FASHION STUDIO: What are the most popular hair trends at the moment? Which hair styles would you recommend for the upcoming Christmas parties?

ROBERT: In terms of cuts for the upcoming season, I would definitely say it's "the lob" - so like a long bob, a little bit shorter in the front, a little bit longer throughout the back; it kind of sits around the collar bone area.

In terms of colour, something popular that we are doing a lot of and I really like, is called "the sombre" -  it's like a version of the ombre, but it's a little bit softer, more tone on tone, it's more a natural kind of look. That's what I'm finding is the current trend right now.

In terms of hair styling for Christmas parties and for the upcoming winter season, I would say kind of undone hair, nothing that looks too perfect; soft, natural, kind of beach waves. Half pinned, pinned on one side, maybe incorporate a couple of braids. Just keep it soft and natural looking.

FASHION STUDIO: Could you share some of your best tips for great looking, healthy hair?

ROBERT: My number one tip would be using Color Extend Shampoo and Conditioner that Redken sells. It's a colour-safe shampoo that helps to maintain the longevity of the colour. It maximazes colour vibracy while strengthening hair at the same time.

On top of that, protein is a key fundamental to healthy hair. And even balance of protein and moisture definitely. We have an excellent Anti-Snap Treatment which is recommended for everyone who colours, bleaches or overprocesses their hair. Anti-Snap is a protein line and it is great for maintaining healthy hair. Its enhanced formula repairs, strengthens and protects hair shine.

And then always finishing with some type of an oil.

FASHION STUDIO: What would you recommend for one of the most common problems - dry hair and split ends?

Robert: For split ends, my number one piece of advice is getting just haircuts on a regular basis. If you use quite a bit of hot tools like flat irons, you always want to use a heat protector in your hair. So you're basically coating the hair with the serum that protects over 450 degrees to maintain the health and not increase any split ends and damage.

In terms of dry hair, what I would say is when you're going to condition your hair in the shower, what you wanna do is to wring out your hair and get as much water out of it as possible, and then apply your conditioner. The reason that you wanna do that and not apply it to wet hair is because the water dilutes the efficacy of the conditioner. So if you actually apply it to wet hair, you're not getting any moisture benefit out of it.

And then always follow up with an oil. We have a great one called Argan-6, which is perfect for managing frizz and for adding moisture. I would always use those two. So moisture conditioner and oil afterwards. And just use them on a regular basis to maintain your hair.

If your hair is very long, it is easier to get dry ends on the bottom.

FASHION STUDIO: What is your favourite hair product you can't live without?

ROBERT: That's a tough one. I have a lot of those favourite products. I would say it would have to be Guts, Guts 10 from Redken. It's like an aerosol mousse. Now, I like to apply it at the route area and at the ends. It is light and soft, and it just gives the blow dry so much control and hold. So that is one of my go-to products.

I love texture sprays at the end, so Fashion Waves 07 from Redken is amazing. You spray it in your curls on the ends, it gives you more of a beachy feel, it's great for styling men's hair. It gives you a good amount of control and hold. The spray is excellent.

And then again, I finish all my hairstyles with Argan-6 Oil just to give you that extra bit of shine, extra bit of frizz protection. And it also gives the ends a little bit more definition.

FASHION STUDIO: Where do you see D2E Hair Boutique in the future? What is your ultimate goal for the company?

ROBERT: As for now, we are still a small company, there is only four of us here. We do have another person starting with us in February. My ideal goal for this location would be to expand the floor that we are on here, so open up to make more useable space. I would like to grow our staff to about 14. And then hopefully in the next three to five years we'd be able to branch off and open up a separate location.

And ideally a direction I would like to take it in is also to create a very specific men's boutique.

FASHION STUDIO: Thank you so much for your time and good luck with all your plans!
