THE GLAMOUR OF ITALIAN FASHION 1945-2014

The Glamour of Italian Fashion 1945-2014 is the first major exhibition to explore Italy’s rich contribution to modern fashion from the end of the Second World War to the present. It examines the craftsmanship, luxurious materials and expertise for which Italy has become renowned across couture, fine tailoring, innovative ready-to-wear and accessories. On display are around 100 ensembles, both menswear and womenswear, by the leading Italian fashion houses including Dolce and Gabbana, Giorgio Armani, Gucci, Missoni, Prada, Valentino and Versace alongside the work of forgotten post-war designers such as the Fontana Sisters and Simonetta as well as garments by the emerging Italian fashion talent of today. The clothes are brought to life with film and fashion photography of the period.

NEW EXHIBITION
WEDDING DRESSES 1775-2014
3 MAY 2014 2014 – 15 MARCH 2015
This exhibition traces the development of the fashionable white wedding dress and its interpretation by leading couturiers and designers such as Charles Frederick Worth, Norman Hartnell, Charles James, John Galliano, Christian Lacroix and Vera Wang, offering a panorama of fashion over the last two centuries. On display are over 80 of the most romantic, glamorous and extravagant wedding outfits from the V&A’s collection, including important new acquisitions and loans such as the embroidered silk coat design by Anna Valentine and worn by The Duchess of Cornwall for the blessing after her marriage to HRH The Prince of Wales (2005), the purple Vivienne Westwood dress chosen by Dita Von Teese (2005) and the Dior outfits worn by Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale on their wedding day (2002). The exhibition investigates the histories of the garments, revealing fascinating details about the lives of the wearers, giving an intimate insight into their occupations, circumstances and fashion choices.

ELIZABETH EMANUEL

British fashion designer Elizabeth Emanuel discusses her career creating couture and bridalwear for some of the world’s most famous women. Best known for designing the wedding dress for Diana, Princess of Wales in 1981, her work has been seen by millions worldwide.

Amanda Triossi, curator of the Bulgari Heritage collection discusses the collection and the 130th anniversary of Bulgari this year with V&A curator, Sonnet Stanfill. Among Bulgari’s fans have been a number of celebrities, including Elizabeth Taylor and Grace Kelly.

Fashion designer Peter Jensen and artist and illustrator Julie Verhoeven discuss their collaboration for their new collection inspired by pop superstar Diana Ross. The garments include party and day wear which feature large-scale images of Ross.

WORKSHOP
SOFT CIRCUITS – INTERACTIVE ACCESSORIES
SATURDAY 3 SATURDAY 3 MAY, 10.30 – 17.00
Visitors are invited to create a light-up purse or small bag from a range of textiles, using a drawstring to turn the circuit on or off. Led by Codasign, the workshop covers an introduction to electronics and how to sew circuits using conductive thread, LEDs and a coin battery.
