SINGAPORE - A must-see exhibition for all Chanel lovers opened yesterday at Ngee Ann City. Les Secrets Du Sac: A Handbag Exhibition by Chanel is an intimate showcase of the brand's timeless handbags including two personal pieces that belonged to Mademoiselle Chanel herself (one in lambskin and the other in jersey and gold hardware - pictured above). The exhibition takes you into a magical world of one of the most iconic brands and is also a good reminder that luxury goods are so much more than just a status symbol.
Once you enter the exhibition, you are introduced to a dark corridor where some of the most famous fashion quotes by Karl Lagerfeld and Coco Chanel are displayed at intervals on strips of digital screen.
“I don't like standard beauty - there is no beauty without strangeness.” - Karl Lagerfeld

The first room features Disney-inspired handbags, “Blanche Neige”, created in 2008 by a Belgian neo-conceptual artist Wim Delvoye which were originally shown at the Chanel’s Mobile Art exhibition. There are also two black handbags customized by an American luxury brand Chrome Hearts (in 2011) featuring their signature fleur-de-lis on the charms and on the back pocket.
Next are Karl Lagerfeld's luxurious designs in alligator skin that were flown in especially for this exhibition. All pieces are displayed in elegant glass cabinets and surrounded by mirrors that give an interesting 3D effect.

Another room shows a preview of Chanel Cruise 2013 collection (an interesting mix of eighteenth century French aristocracy and a modern punk style) that will be available for purchase at the end of November.
This is then followed by the Classic Chanel handbags, including the 1993 Karl Lagerfeld patchwork bag, celebrated for its “hippie chic” appeal. The room also features floor to ceiling illuminated photo frames showing Chanel 90's campaigns with supermodels Claudia Schiffer and Kate Moss.

The last part of the exhibition is a small movie room with burgundy interior walls, where you can sit comfortably and watch a short film that shows the process of creating the brand’s iconic 2.55 handbag (named for the month and year it was designed). An interesting video reveals 7 stages to the making of a Chanel handbag, from the precise cutting to the final packaging where every stage is artfully carried out with great skill and attention to detail.
Les Secrets Du Sac exhibition runs from 10 to 14 November 2012 at the second level of the Ngee Ann City boutique. Admission is free and open to the public. Highly recommended!
