Iris Apfel partnered up with HSN again, launching her own handbag collection called Extinctions. The 90-year-old fashion icon has teamed up in the past with the American home shopping network. From her HSN accessories line and collaborations with Alexis Bittar and Yoox.com to a MAC makeup line, Apfel has been involved in many stylish ventures. “I have a lot of creative juices - I like to use them up or it chokes me,” she said.
Extinctions, will be available in October this year and will include twelve pieces in five colours. The bags, made of luxe exotic materials like Mongolian lamb, calf hair and snakeskin, will be priced between $228 and $398. The line will reference Apfel's own collection of handbags. “I’m a colour person. I’ve never been known to play it safe,” she told WWD. “Plus I like big bags. My eyeglasses are so big they don’t fit into smaller bags."
With a documentary being filmed about her life, a mentoring programme at the University of Texas, an ongoing jewellery collaboration with online shopping site HSN, and a range of sunglasses and optical frames coming out for EyeBobs next year, Apfel might be 90 but she is still the one to watch.
