MAKEUP - THE ULTIMATE ACCESSORY

By Lisa Doherty (Makeup Artist)

2011 is going to be a great year for makeup! Not only are there new trends making their way to the forefront, but older classic looks are coming back. We began to see this in 2009 and 2010 with the return of the pinup red lip. This season, any colour, shade or texture goes.

Just like fashion is stepping away from the “match your shoes with your belt” ways, so is makeup. Whether it is a smoky eye, a bold lip or fake lashes, there are several different styles to experiment with.

Makeup can complete the look of any outfit. It is an accessory on its own and can be that last touch to a hot fashion trend. Basically, clothes and makeup go together and any Fashionista will say that you can’t have one without the other.

For 2011, many of the trends seen throughout the new millennium are still hot today. However, what would the makeup world be without new creativity and colour? Here are some of the hot 2011 trends for spring and summer.

The colourful smoky eye: A neutral smoky eye always works with any colour in your wardrobe, and is a great way to make your eyes pop. But why not kick it up a notch and paint your lid green, purple, blue or pink? You can still use the charcoals and brown to give your eye that desired smoky effect. Remember though, that bold eyes are always complemented well by a nude or neutral lip and cheeks. You also want to make sure that the colour compliments your eyes and not your clothes.A bright purple eye with a bright purple shirt can be too much, and too much of a good thing can make you look overdone.

The bright lip: Pucker up! Lips are where the real trend is this year. Bold and bright colours like coral, red, orange, and hot pink are making a strong appearance in the fashion world. This look creates a level of sexiness that can boost any girl’s confidence. Wearing a boring fitted t-shirt and jeans today? How about accessorizing your features and adding a tangerine lip as an accessory. Again, you want a bold lip to stand out so a neutral eye or earth tones on the lids are crucial to make this look successful.

Aqua: Aqua eyes, lips, eyebrows and shadows are in! This is a great way to make a confident girl stand out without looking too eccentric and it complements many different skin tones and eye colours. But before you go and paint your eyebrows turquoise, just know that there is a time and place for everything, and this includes makeup. Pulling off aqua eyeliner on a dinner date is one thing, but walking a runway is another. For an everyday look, try and stick with the liner or shadow with a neutral lip.

Metallic Mania: Not only are metallic fabrics making their way into our closets, metallic makeup is making a grand entrance as well. The great thing about metallic makeup is that it can be worn at all times of the day. The trick to wearing it however is its application. Blending is very important when it comes to a flawless metallic eye or a bronzy cheek. Also, some metallic colours can create a washout effect. If you have lighter coloured eyes and fair skin, try the darker shades. If you have a darker complexion, try the icy, frosty colours like a shimmery white or silver.

Confidence can be trendy and it is the name of the game for 2011. Time and time again, many women play it conservative with their makeup because they “just don’t know what works”. If this is you, then this is the year to step outside of your comfort zone. 2011 is the bold, bright and confident year!
