CREATIVE HAIRDRESSING

Julia

Occupation: Hair Stylist
City: London, UK
Website: Julia Barrano

FASHION STUDIO: How did you become interested in hair styling and the fashion industry? Is anyone from your family or friends involved in this business?

JULIA: My godmother studied hairdressing. She has always been a huge inspiration for me. She was also the one who introduced me to the fashion world.

FASHION STUDIO: What skills are important in becoming a good hair stylist?

JULIA: To be an exceptional hairdresser, for me, means having a good foundation of basic hairdressing techniques and above that an eye for what suits individuals. For me, it's of great importance to always keep up to date with the latest trends and to never stop learning.

FASHION STUDIO: Your hair designs are very creative. Where do you get your inspiration from?

JULIA: “Nothing is lost, nothing is created, everything is transformed.” - Robert Masciave. Every different shape and colour combination can be inspiring. I just try to put my individual twist to it, to make it my own.

FASHION STUDIO: Do you remember your first hair design?

JULIA: My first ever shoot was a very basic look which I created for a photographer friend of mine. It was very down to earth and not as opulent as the looks I create now.

FASHION STUDIO: What was the most complicated hair design that you've ever made and how long did it take?

JULIA: It was for Black Beauty magazine. I had to create four looks reflecting the four elements: earth, wind, fire, and water. The last look especially was very challenging. Just the preparation took me three days. On the actual day of the shoot I needed an hour and a half to finish the look.

FASHION STUDIO: What do you consider your biggest achievement so far?

JULIA: I was selected as one of the 15 finalists from the UK for the FAME Team competition. It was an amazing feeling to be part of this.

FASHION STUDIO: Being successful means...

JULIA: Being fulfilled in my daily work at the salon, making my clients happy and feel beautiful as well as being able to show my creative side on stage and on photo shoots, makes me love my job and feel successful.

FASHION STUDIO: How about your most difficult experience or challenge that you had to overcome?

JULIA: The most stressful time during my career was probably when I prepared for my first ever competition. Lots of stress, sleepless nights and 24hour work. But it was worth it.

FASHION STUDIO: How would you describe the fashion industry in London?

JULIA: Forward, individualistic, avant-garde.

FASHION STUDIO: Most stylish place in the city...

JULIA: I love the vibrant atmosphere in East London, especially Dalston. A lot of the young creatives work and live here and that reflects in their style and the atmosphere of the area.

FASHION STUDIO: Which fashion designers do you admire?

JULIA: That would be Dame Vivienne Westwood, I love the way she works with different textures. Alexander McQueen, there is so much drama and extravagance in his creations and Valentin Yudashkin for his outstanding ability to combine colours in exciting ways.

FASHION STUDIO: What hairstyles are currently in fashion?

JULIA: Definitely long hair and everything that comes with it. Plaits, twists, locks...

Salon International

FASHION STUDIO:  Who does your hair? How often do you change your hairstyle?

JULIA: I am really fussy with my hair and it took me a while to find the right person to handle me. So now a good friend and colleague is doing my hair, under my supervision of course. I change my hair every season or so, but would love to do it even more often.

FASHION STUDIO: Which hair products would you recommend? Have you got your favourite brand?

JULIA: Because I have fine hair I cannot live without Kerastase “Soin Densitive GL” I am absolutely loving it. I would also recommend Orofluido (a serum) for any type of hair. I don't favour any particular brand, there are amazing products to be found in any range.

FASHION STUDIO: What kind of diet helps to keep hair in excellent condition?

JULIA: Be healthy, don't stress yourself, drink plenty of water.

FASHION STUDIO: What is your biggest dream?

JULIA: That my work is being recognized, as well as to keep doing what makes me happy most, hairdressing.

FASHION STUDIO: Thank you and all the best for the future!
